Rwanda is arguably the best place to trek primates, the land of thousand hills is also blessed with a vast of wildlife including primates, big five and bird species for birders. Primate safaris of interest in Rwanda include Mountain Gorillas, Chimpanzee, Golden Monkey and the black and white monkey. Primate safaris in Rwanda start in the morning and its best to carry a daypack where you have a couple of liters of water, long trousers, long sleeved shirt, rain jacket, hiking boots and a hat.
Volcanoes National Park is a home of mountain gorillas, located in the western part of Rwanda. The ape is only found in southwest Uganda, northwest Rwanda and eastern DRC. Gorillas can climb trees but are normally found on the ground, these apes usually live in communities of up to 20 individuals. Communities are led by one adult male usually called a silverback because of silver hair that embellishes the dark fur. Gorilla tracking is one of the best tourist attractions at Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda.
Golden Monkey Tracking
Scarce golden monkeys have been spotted in the remarkable Virunga Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkey tracking is a popular tourist activity in Volcanoes National Park, this activity starts in the morning at the park’s headquarters at Kinigi, and this activity is less difficult than gorilla trekking.
Nyungwe is a home to 13 species of primates the park is the only destination in Rwanda that offers chimpanzee trekking. Chimpanzees at the park are being habituated which means they are used to human beings. . Chimp tracking here is although more hit-and-miss than gorilla tracking in Virungas, partly because these smaller and less sedentary apes are usually found either feeding high in the trees or moving swiftly along the ground.
Black and White Colobus Monkey
