Overview

Our 6 Days Congo and Rwanda safari is one of the combined safari packages that we offer our clients who are interested in visiting both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. On this 6 days Congo and Rwanda combined safari, you will get to track lowland gorillas in Congo’s Kahuzi Biega national park and also trek Mountain gorillas in Volcanoes national park in Rwanda. You will also be visiting Nyungwe national park where you will hike to the canopy walkway bridge and track chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest.

Day 1: Pickup in Kigali and Transfer to Bukavu-Congo

Depending on where you are in Kigali, our business representative-guide/driver will pick you up and take you for around 5 hours via Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park with lovely rolling hills in Rusizi, with stops for lunch and refreshment. Cross the border from Cyangugu to Bukavu in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. When you arrive in Bukavu, the closest town to Kahuzi Biega proceed to your lodge for supper and an overnight stay at Orchid Safari Lodge.

It is important to note that your Rwanda visa expires the moment you enter into Congo, therefore you will need to renew for one when at the border and find it ready after the trip.

Day 2: Lowland Gorilla Trekking

After breakfast at the resort, drive for around 45 minutes to the park headquarters for a briefing on the Eastern lowland gorillas. You will then begin your amazing adventure with lowland gorillas in the valleys of Kahuzi, where you will see many animals, birds, and primates. It’s generally a 1-6 hour jungle experience, depending on their mobility as you snap images and videos of them interacting/playing with each other.

You will then return to your accommodation for supper and sleep at Orchid Safari Lodge, like you did the night before. It is important to note that your Rwanda visa expires the moment you enter into Congo, therefore you will need to renew for one when at the border and find it ready after the trip.

Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe and Canopy Walk

After a leisurely breakfast, you will return to Rwanda via the Ruzizi 1 border crossing. You’ll make your way to your hotel to check in and eat lunch.

After lunch, you will connect with your driver guide to the park for the 2 p.m. canopy walk in Nyungwe forest. The canopy walk in Nyungwe forest is a 200-meter-long bridge hanging 9 meters above the ground, providing a bird’s-eye perspective of the forest. From above, take in the amazing sounds, views, and pure air of the pristine tropical rain forest. Drive directly to your hotel in time for supper the night before. Spend the first night of your trip at Nyungwe.

Day 4: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe

Before entering the jungle in search of the lively and playful friends in Nyungwe forest, enjoy breakfast and go for a briefing about the endangered chimps. The Chimpanzees are considerably more visible as they jump from one tree to the next, talking and laughing. Chimpanzee tracking typically takes 3 hours. Spend an hour looking for them and shooting photographs and videos. After that, you’ll return to your hotel to freshen up before spending the rest of the day at leisure.

An optional tea plantation or community tour is available. Return to your hotel in time for supper and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park-Ruhengeri and visit Ibyi’wacu Village.

Once breakfast has been provided, you will drive to Kibuye for lunch. Continue driving till you reach Volcanoes National Park and the Ibyi’wachu Cultural Center for your cultural tour. You will drive to your hotel for supper and an overnight stay.

Day 6: Gorilla Trekking and Transfer Back to Kigali.

Breakfast will be provided early, and lunch will be prepared ahead of time. The briefing is scheduled for 7 a.m. Your guide will provide you with highlights of detailed facts about the gorillas you will be following. The climb might take anything between one and seven hours.

Trekking over the steep bamboo hills and then coming across the gorillas hidden in the bush is an inspirational and fortunate experience. When you get to the gorillas, you are permitted to spend one hour with them while standing 6 meters away.

After this remarkable meeting, you will re-join your driver / guide and travel back to Kigali, where your driver guide will drop you off at a desired location, either a hotel of your choosing or Kigali International Airport.
