The Le Petit Virunga package covers three nights in Virunga National Park, including two nights at Mikeno Lodge, a mountain gorilla trek, a volcanic trek, and one night on Nyiragongo volcano. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 1300 hours, this package departs Goma.

Day 1: Pickup from Kigali and Transfer to Virunga National Park.

Arrive to the Grande Barrière border crossing by 11:30 a.m. and check in with the Virunga tourism office by 13:00 a.m. The tourist office is conveniently positioned opposite passport control in the Grande Barrière border post building. At check-in, visitors will be given gorilla and volcano trek permits. These permissions must be produced before each expedition begins. After check-in, visitors will be transferred to Bukima Tented Camp in the Gorilla sector. Lunch will be given upon arrival to Bukima, and the afternoon will be free to explore.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

Following an early breakfast, guests will go for the gorilla walk directly from their tent. Before beginning the gorilla trek, trekkers will meet their Ranger leaders and local pisteurs for a briefing. Treks often entail 1-2½ hours of trekking each way, depending on the group’s location and the severity of the terrain. Trekkers will be brought back to Mikeno Resort after spending the permitted hour with the gorillas. The balance of the day can be spent relaxing on the lodge terrace or seeing the gorilla orphans at the Senkwekwe Center.

Day 3: Hike to Mount Nyiragongo

After breakfast at Mikeno Lodge, the guest will be transported to the Kibati Ranger Post, the departure point for the Nyiragongo volcano trek. On arrival at Kibati, climbers will receive a briefing and have the opportunity to hire porters. The climb up the volcano takes around four to six hours and trekkers will overnight on the summit.

Day 4: Descend Mount Nyiragongo and Transfer Back to Kigali.

Climbers will leave the crater rim early in the morning and begin their descend back to Kibati. The average time of descent is four hours. When passengers reach the bottom, they will be carried back to Goma and dropped off at the Grande Barrière border crossing.

This package includes two nights’ lodging at Mikeno Lodge, a gorilla hike, and other activities.

Please note that beverages, the rental of a Nyiragongo backpack, and porter costs are not included in this package. Also, gifts and other personal items of any nature.
